Hillsborough County to Introduce Bucs Wheelchair Football Team
Hillsborough County, Fla. (Sept. 3, 2021) - On Wednesday, Sept. 8, Hillsborough County Adaptive Sports will introduce Tampa Bay's newest group of football players: the Hillsborough County Buccaneers Wheelchair Football Team. Selected as an expansion team for the USA Wheelchair Football League, the Hillsborough County Buccaneers Wheelchair Football Team was recently formed through Hillsborough County Adaptive Sports, a signature program of Hillsborough County Parks & Recreation.
The team, which has been practicing throughout the summer, will meet on Wednesday before traveling to Phoenix, Arizona, to kick off its season Sept. 11-12 against teams from other NFL markets. Wednesday's practice will feature Buccaneers Legend Dexter Jackson, Super Bowl XXXVII MVP, who will speak to the athletes and present them with Buccaneers helmets and gear to wear for their upcoming competition.
This is the first wheelchair football team for Hillsborough County's Adaptive Sports program, which promotes health, independence, and personal growth through sports for people with physical disabilities. The USA Wheelchair Football League (USAWFL) is a program of "Move United," a nonprofit organization devoted to the promotion of parasports among youths and adults with physical disabilities. League expansion was made possible through the NFL Salute to Service Award and the Bob Woodruff Foundation.
