Hillsborough County is Searching for the Most Attractive, Environmentally Friendly Landscapes

Extension Service is accepting applications for Tampa Bay Community Water Wise Awards until June 30

Hillsborough County, Fla. (June 23, 2022) - Hillsborough County Extension Service is accepting applicants for the Tampa Bay Community Water Wise Awards to recognize the most attractive and water-conserving landscapes in the area.

The Tampa Bay Community Water Wise Awards are given to individuals and businesses that are committed to creating landscapes that conserve water, protect the environment, and utilize Florida-Friendly Landscaping™ principles.

Judges will evaluate landscapes based on the nine Florida-Friendly Landscaping™ principles, which include selecting the right plant for the right place, utilizing efficient irrigation, choosing proper fertilizer and mulch, selecting plants that attract wildlife, using recycled yard waste, reducing stormwater runoff and protecting the waterfront.

Applicants can enter their landscape for consideration by submitting an online application by midnight on June 30 with photos that show the landscape from the front, back, and side. Finalists will receive an on-site evaluation by a County extension office representative, along with a local water utility representative. The winner will receive a handmade steppingstone.

Hillsborough County Extension Service, in partnership with Florida-Friendly Landscaping™ and Tampa Bay Water, hosts the Tampa Bay Community Water Wise Awards, which aim to promote appropriate gardening habits and recognize community members who are committed to creating environmentally friendly landscapes.
