Homegrown Hillsborough: Kohlrabi

Hillsborough County farmers grow more than 60 crops. Here's a type of produce that residents can cultivate in their own gardens.

Fun fact:

Kohlrabi leaves are excellent in salads, or cooked like collard greens. Kohlrabi stems can be shredded, braised, roasted, baked, sautéed, pickled, or stir-fried.

When is fresh local kohlrabi available at local groceries and farm stands?

Kohlrabi is not a significant commercial crop in Hillsborough County. But it is available at many produce stands and markets, generally from November through May.

What types of kohlrabi are grown here?

Deep purple and vibrant green.

Where is kohlrabi most commonly grown in Hillsborough County?

In residential gardens.

How many pounds of kohlrabi are harvested?

Depending on planting density, 29,000 to 260,000 pounds per acre.

Local insight:

Sometimes mistaken as a root, the cabbage/turnip-like bulb of the kohlrabi plant, which grows just above the ground's surface, actually is a swollen stem.
