Anything but Crickets
The unveiling of a new park sign that bears the name of Al Higginbotham serves as a lasting tribute to the man who championed the first designated cricket fields in Hillsborough County. As a result of his efforts, local interest in the sport has grown.
The County's cricket fields opened in 2015 after the Tampa Cricket League asked him to help find somewhere they could play. At the time, there were a handful of teams. Now 40 adult cricket teams and 30 youth teams play at the Higginbotham Park fields that features three pitches.
It was anything but crickets from the audience, who rose to their feet in a standing ovation after listening to colleagues recount Higginbotham's 12 years of public service.
Now retired, Higginbotham and his wife, Devon, will soon leave the Tampa area to travel the country in an RV.Photo information: Commissioner Al Higginbotham with family, friends and former staff
