Turkey Bowl Draws Flock of Young Athletes from County Rec Centers

Skills, sportsmanship on display at pre-Thanksgiving Day flag football tournament

Parks & Recreation's annual Turkey Bowl competition is on Wednesday, Nov. 27, right before Thanksgiving Day.

Held every year since 2002, the event is a flag football tournament among teams representing Hillsborough County recreation centers. The competition celebrates the achievements of squads comprised of children ages 8-11 in afterschool programs, where good character and sportsmanship are emphasized.

This year 12 teams will vie for the coveted Gobbler trophy and fried turkey legs for members of the winning lineup. The teams come from these 10 County recreation centers: Egypt Lake, Emanuel P. Johnson, Gardenville, Jackson Springs, Mango, Northdale, Roy Haynes, Ruskin, Thonotosassa, and Westchase.

Games begin at 8:30 a.m. and continue until 4 p.m. Wednesday. The competition is at Northdale Park & Recreation Center, (https://www.hillsboroughcounty.org/en/locations/northdale-park-and-recreation-center;) 15550 Spring Pine Drive.

The Turkey Bowl is the culmination of the program's two-month flag football season, with all-star players from each rec center selected to participate. The winning team takes the Gobbler trophy to its home rec center, where it remains for one year.
