Hillsborough County Celebrates Michael S. Merrill Day

Board of County Commissioners recognizes retiring county administrator for his 32 years of service

Since 1988, Mike Merrill has made significant positive impacts to Hillsborough County. From his duties as director of the Debt Management Department and Assistant County Administrator for Utilities and Commerce to his appointment as County Administrator in 2010, Merrill has helped Hillsborough County grow prosperity.

During the June 17 virtual Board of County Commissioners meeting, the Board celebrated Merrill's successful career by presenting him a proclamation declaring June 17 as Michael S. Merrill Day. The Board also renamed the Pet Resource Center as the Michael S. Merrill Pet Resource Center, solidifying his legacy.

After presenting the recognitions, members of the Board and County officials, along with dignitaries from the health care and higher education industries and government officials from across the state, expressed their heartfelt gratitude to Merrill for his years of public service.

"So many of us, we're the product of people who helped us along the way. And I've been very fortunate all my life to have really good people looking out after me … good people helping me," Merrill said. "Education has been a big part of my life over the years, and I … see life as a classroom. It's an opportunity for all of us to learn and share what we've learned. And I tried to do that with this organization."
