Matching shapes

Get Adaptive: Match the Shape

Improve short-term memory through recognition and matching skills

Help your child improve their short-term memory and cognition by recognizing and matching shapes with this Hillsborough County Parks & Recreation staff activity.

Materials Needed:

  • Paper/foam plates
  • Permanent markers
  • Flat surface

Now that you have your materials, let's get to matching.

Step 1: Start with the paper plates facing up, drawing shapes in pairs onto the plates with markers. (example: 2 plates with a triangle, 2 plates with a square, 2 plates with a diamond)
Step 2: After shapes are drawn onto plates, face the side of the plate with the shape facing down on a flat surface.
Step 3: Pick up one plate at a time looking at the shape and facing it back down onto the surface. Object is to match the shapes, remembering where the shapes are under the plates.
Step 4: Repeat until all shapes/plates are matched!
