When Life Seems Overwhelming, Small Actions Can Make a Big Difference

Mental health resources available for veterans in need

Suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in the United States. It is even more common among active military members, their families, and Veterans.

Hillsborough County Consumer and Veterans Services is acutely aware of the importance of suicide prevention. It stands ready to connect military Veterans and their families with earned VA benefits and resource providers for both physical and mental health. Consultations and services are free. Call (813) 635-8316 or visit the website

Troubled Veterans are encouraged to reach out, as are relatives and acquaintances of those affiliated with military service who are having a hard time coping. Small actions can make a big difference, whether it's a visit, a telephone call, a text message, or a video chat. Learn how to help.

Recognizing suicide's warning signs is critical. It is important to act boldly, not to explain away an individual's suicidal thoughts or actions or, worse, promise to keep them a secret. While suicide has many causes, the goal of prevention is to reduce risk factors and promote resilience, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic has created additional challenges to mental health. When you or someone you know has suicidal thoughts, help is available 24/7. Here are some hot-line telephone numbers:

  • National Suicide Lifeline: 1 800-273-TALK (8255). Veterans or people concerned about those with military connections may dial the same number, then press 1, or send a text to 838255.
  • Florida Veterans Support Line: 1-844-MyFLVet (693-5838).
  • Crisis Center of Tampa Bay: 2-1-1
