County Commits Up to $5 million to Help Food-Insecure Residents

American Rescue Plan Funding to assist Feeding Tampa Bay with new community center and food distribution warehouse

The Hillsborough County Board of County Commissioners approved up to $5 million in American Rescue Plan funding for a Feeding Tampa Bay project designed to increase resources for those experiencing food or economic challenges caused by COVID-19.

The board unanimously approved the funding as part of Hillsborough County's American Rescue Plan Investment Plan. The money will go toward Feeding Tampa Bay's proposed 215,000-square-foot food bank and community outreach center, which will be built in Hillsborough County and serve residents throughout 10 West Central Florida counties.

The project will include a 140,000-square-foot food storage and distribution warehouse, a grocery store and restaurant, volunteer space, community room, kitchen, and space for Feeding Tampa Bay's job training programs. The project will increase the amount of food distributed and will increase space for job training programs fivefold. The organization offers job training in several categories, including commercial driver's licenses, warehouse logistics, and culinary arts.

About the Hillsborough County American Rescue Plan Investment Plan
The Hillsborough County American Rescue Plan Investment Plan, approved by the Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) on Sept. 1, 2021, provides a framework for investing the $285 million in federal Coronavirus State and Local Fiscal Recovery Funds in the community. The funding will support vital projects throughout the county related to water, sewer, and broadband infrastructure; public health response; negative economic impacts; and revenue replacement for certain government services. Projects funded by Hillsborough County must meet the guidelines established by the federal government while addressing the County's unique community needs and reflecting the BOCC's collective values in addressing residents' needs. The $5 million for the Feeding Tampa Bay project comes from this plan by the BOCC.
