Right-Side-Drive Jeep Gives Mosquito Management New Edge against Mosquitoes

New Technique More Cost Effective, Safer, and Efficient

Hillsborough residents in urban neighborhoods might do a double take when they see the newest addition to the Mosquito Management fleet fighting to control the population of dangerous and annoying mosquitoes.

Mosquito Management aims to eliminate mosquitoes in the larva stage before they can grow wings and bite. The new and unusual new vehicle in the Mosquito Management fleet will help the department reach into densely populated urban areas to treat catch basins and stormwater drains, habitats preferred by several common mosquito species found throughout Hillsborough County.

A 2022 Jeep Wrangler outfitted with a driver's seat on the right side will enable the mosquito team to drop golf ball-sized briquettes of long-lasting mosquito larva treatment into storm drains to eliminate mosquitoes in their larval stage, before they are old enough to bite and breed.

The Jeep has a basket that hangs off the driver's door to carry the briquettes, so the driver can drop them into storm drains along the road. The briquets dissolve in the standing water that can be a breeding ground for mosquitoes, including those that can spread illnesses.

This new technique enables the Mosquito Management team to fight mosquitoes in ways that are more cost effective and efficient. Hillsborough has more than 60,000 of this type of potential mosquito habitat, and most are in densely populated urban areas. Treating all of those drains on foot or stopping a vehicle at each drain to get out and apply the treatment are both inefficient and unsafe.

The new Jeep is expected to help the team treat as many as 500 storm drains a day.

Mosquito Management Services now has a right-side-drive Jeep to help get access to stormwater drains across the County.
