County Selects Projects for 2022 Historic Preservation Challenge Grants

Program rehabilitates historic properties, promotes heritage tourism

Giving a new life to an abandoned theater and social club, rescuing a Prohibition-era bootlegger bar, and converting a Masonic Lodge into a microbrewery are among the 18 projects scheduled to receive $1.5 million in grants this year to support historic preservation and heritage tourism. The grants are offered through Hillsborough County's Historic Preservation Challenge Grant program.

Under the program, businesses and nonprofits can apply for grants of up to $250,000 with a minimum of one-to-one match. The money must be used to rehabilitate historic properties or for projects that help build the heritage tourism industry. Since its inception in 2011, the HPCG program has awarded nearly $12 million for more than 100 projects.
