How to stay cool and safe during extreme heat

  • Stay indoors - Residents are reminded during heat advisories to stay indoors, stay hydrated, and check in with vulnerable neighbors and loved ones.
  • Drink plenty of fluids - Residents can refill water bottles in County parks, libraries, or government buildings across the county
  • Do not leave children or pets in cars - Cars can quickly heat up to dangerous temperatures, even with a window cracked open. While anyone left in a parked car is at risk, children are especially at risk of getting heat stroke or dying.
  • Wear appropriate clothing and sunscreen - Choose lightweight, light-colored, loose-fitting clothing, and put on sunscreen of SPF 15 or higher 30 minutes prior to going out

Heat-related illnesses and death are largely preventable with proper planning, education, and action.
